Earthquake Hits SW China's Sichuan Province

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted southwest China's Sichuan province Thursday morning, according to the China Seismological Bureau.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted southwest China's Sichuan province Thursday morning, according to the China Seismological Bureau.

The tremor occurred at 10:17 Beijing time in Yanyuan county (27.4 degrees latitude north and 101.3 degrees longitude east) in the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Liangshan, southwest Sichuan province,and the epicenter was in Gansheng village, according to the bureau.

Gansheng village has no access to highways or telephones.

Rescue teams led by local authorities have rushed to the scene.
