China Beats Finland at Women's Basketball Opener

Chinese women's basketball team overcame a sluggish start to beat Finland 85-75 in their opening match at the 22nd World University Games Wednesday in Daegu.

Chinese women's basketball team overcame a sluggish start to beat Finland 85-75 in their opening match at the 22nd World University Games Wednesday in Daegu.

The Chinese squad came across tough resistance before they ended the first half 48-47.

Sui Feifei, last season's MVP in the Chinese women's league, led the Chinese girls resurge to dominate the match since the middle of the third quarter. Chen Nan scored the final shot to seal the victory 85-75.

Chen and Wang Ling each had 18 points to lead the team and Sui added 15 points.

Reetta Piipari hit a game-high 25 points and grabbed 4 reboundsfor Finland.

"I was a bit disappointed about the girls' performance, but thevictory is the most important to build up confidence for the upcoming matches," Chinese head coach Gong Luming said after the match.

The Chinese team are using the tournament as a warmup for the Asian Championships slated for next January in Japan.
