China will strive for more than 10golds at the upcoming World University Games in the southern SouthKorean city of Daegu, Chinese senior sports official said here on Tuesday.
"Our objective is to win more than 10 gold medals," said Duan Shijie, chef de mission of the Chinese Sports Delegation, before leaving for South Korea.
Two years ago, China clinched the top position of the medal standings at the University Games for the first time by collecting54 golds, 25 silvers and 24 bronzes in Beijing. However, Duan thought the situation was totally different this time.
"In the last Games in Beijing, we played as hosts and sent mostof our elite athletes to compete. That's why we had reaped so many golds," Duan said. "This time, many of our first-string athletes are competing in world championships."
"Nevertheless, we will do our best to achieve the best results possible," he added.
China fielded a 336-member delegation to compete in all 13 events except waterpolo at the Games, which kicks off on August 21through to 31.
Big names among the field are newly-crowned triple world swimming champion Luo Xuejuan and women's 200m breaststroke world record holder Qi Hui. Guo Jingjing, dual diving gold medalist at the Barcelona swimming world championships was also in the roster.
The delegation headquarters and the fencing, taekwondo and tennis teams left for Daegu on Tuesday.
