China's Top Legislator Meets Australian PM
Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said Monday that China's new leadership puts much emphasis on developing relations with Australia.

During a meeting with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Wu said China's new leadership is ready to strengthen relations with Australia in areas of politics, economy, culture, education, science and technology.
Wu expressed thanks and appreciation for Australia sticking to the "one-China" policy. He also exchanged views with Howard on the issues of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Wu said China's NPC will continue to enhance exchanges with the Australian parliament to help push forward bilateral relations.
Howard said his brief visit to China gave him a chance to know China's new leadership. He said that the all-round development of Australia-China relations will serve the interests of people in both countries.
The prime minister said Australia's relationship with China was one of the most important for his country.
He said the parliament of Australia supports developing relations with China and will expand friendly exchanges with the NPC.
