There will be no more cases of infection stemming from chemical weapons left behind by the Japanese army which have caused 43 people to be treated in hospital in Qiqihar, northeast China, a local official said Monday.

Yang Xin, secretary of the Qiqihar Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, stressed that the chemical weapons had been disinfected thoroughly.

The casualties occurred on Aug. 4, after five metal barrels were dug up and punctured at a construction site. An oil-like substance leaked into the soil. Chemical weapon experts later confirmed that the material was mustard gas.

Yang said all the victims were exposed directly to the mustard gas or the earth polluted by the chemical. The mustard gas victims will not infect others.

A Japanese medical team which came to assist in the treatment of victims left here Monday. They had visited the No. 203 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, where the victims were being treated, and put forward some remedies. They also discussed with Chinese experts the medical treatment of the Chinese victims.
