Nine people have been confirmed dead in Monday morning's gas explosion in a village-run mine in Shanxi Province, north China, rescuers said Monday night.

There are 18 other miners still trapped in the mine, including a deputy head of the mine. Rescuers see little possibility for them to survive as the high temperature underground makes rescue work difficult.

Primary investigation indicates violation of operating rules may cause the accident.

Altogether 27 miners were working in the mine at Zuoquan County when the blast occurred at around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The provincial government has asked all the mines in the province, except five large state-owned ones, to stop operation for one week for further safety check.
