South Korean navy speedboats Monday fired warning shots at a Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s ship which briefly violated Southern territorial waters, said the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
The 10-ton DPRK's ship crossed the northern limit line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea between the two countries about six miles southeast off Bangnyeong Island shortly before noon.
The DPRK ship moved 800 meters (0.5 miles) into Southern waters but returned to the DPRK side six minutes later as a fleet of South Korean patrol boats gave it five warning shots.
The JCS said there were no other DPRK ships nearby and the DPRK navy showed no particular movements, adding the DPRK ship was believed to have violated South Korean waters due to poor visibility.
This time's violation has brought the number of DPRK's intrusion into South Korean waters so far this year to 15.
The NLL is a controversial sea border between South Korea and the DPRK, which has been not accepted by the latter. And last summer, the navies of the two countries exchanged fire also around the NLL.
