Reuters Cameraman Shot Dead by US Soldiers in Baghdad: Reports

Reuters cameraman Mazen Dana, a Palestinian, 43, was shot dead Sunday by US soldiers on a tank as he filmed outside Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad.

A Reuters cameraman was shot dead Sunday while working near a US-run prison on the outskirts of Baghdad, reports reaching Cairo said.

Mazen Dana, a Palestinian, 43, was shot by US soldiers on a tank as he filmed outside Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad,witnesses were quoted as saying.

Six Iraqi detainees were killed and 59 others wounded lateSaturday in a mortar attack on the notorious prison, the scene ofdeadly riots in June.

Stephen Jukes, Reuters' global head of news, confirmed in astatement that "Mazen was one of Reuters' finest cameramen and weare devastated by his loss. He was a brave and an award winning journalist who had worked in many of the world's hotspots."

The US military in Baghdad also confirmed the death, saying "afatal accident involving a civilian at Abu Ghraib prison" and aninvestigation was underway.

Dana's death brings to 17 the number of journalists or their assistants who have died in Iraq since war began on March 20 while two others have been missing, it was reported.
