HK Marks 58th Anniversary of Victory of Anti-Japanese War
Wong Yan, a veteran who joined the anti-Japanese war during Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1941-1945, felt both happy and sorrowful while attending a ceremony here Sunday marking the 58th anniversary of the victory of anti-Japanese war.
Standing in front of a monument in Sai Kung in commemoration of the martyrs who devoted their lives during the anti-Japanese war and listening to old songs by war veterans which used to encourage them to fight the Japanese invaders, Wong said he was so happy and excited as the ceremony provided him a chance to meet his old friends and recall the old days.
Wearing his old green military uniform, service cap and different sorts of commemorative and honorary medals, Wong, in his 80s, said he felt sad when thinking of the martyrs who contributed their lives for the hard-earned victory.
Some 300 people from all walks of life in Hong Kong and representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), presented wreaths for the martyrs at the ceremony.
On behalf of the sponsors of the commemorative activities, Cheung Hok-ming, chairman of the New Territories Association of Societies, delivered a speech to express his condolence on the martyrs as well as his heart-felt appreciation and lofty respect for the veterans who risked their lives resisting the Japanese occupation.
Cheung pointed out that when HKSAR has turned into the six years since its return to the motherland, people of Hong Kong should support the SAR government and run Hong Kong according to law and make their due efforts for Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity.
