Family of Chinese Female Footballers Confident of Triumph in World Cup
It's time for Chinese girls to claim the title of women's soccer world cup, Wang Qiuying, mother of the most popular Chinese soccer star Sun Wen, told Xinhua Sunday.
It's time for Chinese girls to claim the title of women's soccer world cup, Wang Qiuying, mother of the most popular Chinese soccer star Sun Wen, told Xinhua Sunday.
"They have been worked so hard in nearly two decades, and actually I think, they should have been the winner four years ago," Wang said.
In the impressive final of the World Cup 1999 in the United States, China earned a goalless tie with the hosts after extra time duel but lost in the penalty shootout. In the extra time, a powerful header from Chinese defender Fan Yunjie nearly fulfilled China's dream. Even today, no one can exactly tell if that ball had already passed the goalline before being mysteriously captured by the U.S. goalkeeper.
"They are truly desired for the title and they deserved it," Wang noted.
As invited by the Chinese Football Association (CFA), the family corps of the players of the Chinese women's national team arrived in Beijing to hearten their daughters or sisters before they head for the United States to attend the World Cup 2003.
"My daughter has played soccer for 18 years. To win a world cup title is her dream," Yin Yulian, mother of Chinese defender Xie Huilin, said.
"We will support her and her career as always," Yin said.
Both Sun Wen and Xie Huilin participated in the World Cup 1999.
