Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Saturday said that India was expected to send spacecraft to other planets in the solar system following the proposed moon mission by 2008, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The moon mission, called the "Chandrayan-1," would provide a unique opportunity for frontier scientific research, and was expected to be the fore-runner of more ambitious planetary missions in the years to come," PTI quoted an ISRO statement as saying.

ISRO said the main objectives of "Chandrayan-1" included obtaining imagery of the moon's surface using high-resolution remote sensing instruments in the visible, near infrared, low and high-energy X-ray regions.
