The United States conducted a land-based missile test Saturday and more tests are planned this fall in the Marshall Islands, a US military officer said.
The missile was launched from a silo at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, and is designed to intercept limited long-range ballistic missiles, the Associated Press reported. The purpose of the missile launching was to test the flight performance and potential for use as part of a land-based defense system, the report said.
The United States has attempted to have an initial nationwide defense system against ballistic missiles ready by the end of 2004.
