Value of Receipts for HK Restaurants Falls in 2nd Q

Statistics indicated the value of total receipts for the restaurants sector was 10.5 billion HK dollars (1.34 billion US dollars) in the second quarter of 2003, a decrease of 20 percent from the same period last year.

Statistics indicated the value of total receipts for the restaurants sector was 10.5 billion HK dollars (1.34 billion US dollars) in the second quarter of 2003, a decrease of 20 percent from the same period last year.

In the second quarter of 2003, the value of total purchases of restaurants also fell markedly, by 16 percent to 3.6 billion HK dollars (461 million US dollars), according to a press release of the Census and Statistics Department on Friday.

After discounting the effect of price changes, total restaurant receipts fell by 19 percent in volume in the second quarter of 2003 as compared to a year earlier.

The press release said, to a large extent, business receipts for the restaurants sector in the second quarter of 2003 were dampened by the spread of SARS since mid-March.

Analyzed by type of restaurant, total receipts of Chinese restaurants declined most significantly, by 26 percent in value or 24 percent in volume in the second quarter of 2003 as compared to a year earlier.

Total receipts of bars also fell markedly, by 21 percent in both value and volume, while total receipts of non-Chinese restaurants dropped by 15 percent in value and 13 percent in volume.

Total receipts of fast food shops had lesser yet still noticeable decline, by 11 percent in value and 10 percent in volume in the second quarter of 2003.
