Petar Rodic, a former noted basketball coach of Yugoslavia and now invited to serve as coach in China, says frankly that there is a fairly big gap between the men players of Chinese Olympic Hope Team and their counterparts in the United States and Europe.

Rodic is unsatisfied with the performance of his team after training them for a couple of days. He honestly points out that the players of this team lag far behind those of the Yugoslavian Youth Team he previously coached. He says he is not satisfied with the players' application of passing and dribbling techniques and their basic knowledge of basketball. According to him, young Chinese players should pay more attention to improving their defensive skills.

However, Rodic indicates that his coming to Hainan aims to teach the basic basketball skills to Chinese Olympic Hope Team in order to help its players become the main force of the Chinese Youth Team in two or three years and reserve forces for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

According to him, some young Chinese players pay special attention to offensive skills, often to the neglect of defensive techniques. Basketball game is a sport event requiring both offensive and defensive skills, and considering the special physical features of the Orientals, young Chinese basketball players should give more attention to promoting their defensive skills. As these players haven't adequately grasped the basic knowledge and skills of basketball, Rodic suggests that stress should first be laid on fostering the players' understandings of basketball. He will work hard for this purpose in the early period after his arrival in Haikou. If the players' overall basketball attainment is improved, he will timely adjust his training content and plan.

Rodic expresses his appreciation of the players' attitude toward hard training. He says all these players are diligent and able to endure hardships and some of them can persevere in training when they are feeling unwell, this spirit is most valuable in basketball games.
