Massive Blackouts Cut Power to 10 Million Canadians
A massive power blackout on Thursday afternoon cut power to about 10 million people in southern Ontario with the transit system in Toronto ground to a halt and thousands stranded.
A massive power blackout on Thursday afternoon cut power to about 10 million people in southern Ontario with the transit system in Toronto ground to a halt and thousands stranded.
The power outage occurred minutes after 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT).
The doors into subway stations were closed to prevent overcrowding and efforts were being made to get people out of the subways right now as the power outage affected commuters headed home and left thousands milling about downtown streets.
A spokesman in Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman's office said the cityis setting up an emergency command center.
The Canadian capital of Ottawa was also hit by the power blackout.
All flights to blackout cities have been canceled, said a spokesman for Montreal's Dorval airport.
The widespread power outage also struck US cities including New York City, Detroit and Cleveland.
