Iran to Construct 2nd Phase of Bushehr Atomic Power Plant

Iran's High Council of Atomic Energy has approved construction of the second phase of Bushehr atomic power plant in southern Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

Iran's High Council of Atomic Energy has approved construction of the second phase of Bushehr atomic power plant in southern Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

At a session chaired by First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref, the council reviewed a report by Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) on selecting the best location for the power plant and permitted the agency to take necessary steps to equip it with required accessories to expand the use of nuclear technology in the country.

Aref said IAEO is authorized to complete the second phase of Bushehr nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts and ink the related contracts.

An IAEO report said the organization was also authorized to conduct necessary studies and assessments in line with selection of proper structures and drawing up the environmental data required for setting up of a 5,000-MW nuclear power plant in close coordination with the Management and Planning Organization, the Ministry of Energy and the Department of Environment.

Construction of the first phase of Bushehr atomic power plant began in 1997 with technical assistance from Russia, and it is scheduled to be completed and put into operation, later this year or early next year.
