The motion to impeach Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa fell through Wednesday night after the movers failed to muster a two-third majority in parliament for it to succeed, local media reported Thursday.
The opposition only managed 57 votes against 92 for those who were not for the motion.
After Speaker Amusaa Mwanamwambwa announced the results of the vote, there was a deafening applause from both sides.
When winding up the debate, opposition MP Crispin Sibetta, who tabled the motion accusing Mwanawasa of gross misconduct, corruption and violation of the Constitution, stated the movers had proved the allegations beyond all reasonable doubt and urged members to support the motion.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Mundia Sikatana said the allegations were not sufficient to support the motion and wonderedwhat was on the drafters' minds when they came up with the petition.
The Zambian parliament on Tuesday began to debate a motion to impeach Mwanawasa. The impeachment motion is the first of its kind to be debated in Zambian parliament.
