The U.S. deputy State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said Tuesday that Liberian ex-president Charles Taylor cannot find asylum from war-crimes charges.
Meanwhile Taylor, now holed up in a plush mansion in
Nigeria
, will still have to face trial for atrocities committed in the past in Sierra Leone, White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said from Crawford, Texas, where President George W. Bush is vacationing.
"We believe that all parties held responsible for atrocities in Sierra Leone must be held accountable," she said, noting that the
United States
had no control over the actions of the US-sponsored war-crimes court in that country.
