China Launches Blitz on Illegal Compact Discs

A steam roller pulverized more than 300,000 smuggled and pirated compact discs in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, on Tuesday afternoon.

A steam roller pulverized more than 300,000 smuggled and pirated compact discs in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province, on Tuesday afternoon.

The symbolic action was part of a concerted national action named "2003 China National Action to Destroy Smuggled and Pirated Compact Discs", which destroyed a total of more than 26 million such compact discs nationwide Tuesday, said Wang Binglin, directorof the office of Hainan provincial anti-pornography and anti-piracy work group.

Lin said it was the largest organized action in China to destroy illegal publications in public.

Since 1989, China has been running a campaign on smuggled and pirated video products for 14 consecutive years.
