Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Shiv Shankar Menon in Islamabad Saturday presented his credentials to President Pervez Musharraf, according to state-run Pakistan Television.
This marked the resumption of top level Pak-Indo diplomatic ties after a gap of 20 months. In December 2001, diplomatic and transport links between Pakistan and India were broken after gunmen attacked the Indian parliament.
Menon, 53, was presented guard of honor by a contingent of Pakistan army on his arrival at the president's palace in Islamabad. National anthems of the two countries were played on the occasion.
"President General Pervez Musharraf and the Indian high commissioner discussed matters of mutual interests," the TV channel reported. It gave no further details.
The two countries agreed to restore full diplomatic ties after Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said in April he would make a final bid for peace in his lifetime.
Pakistani High Commissioner Aziz Ahmed Khan has already assumed his office in New Delhi.
In a goodwill gesture, at least 30 parliamentarians from major political parties of India and prominent journalists will come to Pakistan later Saturday. They will meet Pakistani politicians and parliamentarians. However, there is no fixed agenda for their proposed meeting.
