Ten people died and 10 others were missing nationwide as of Monday morning after Typhoon Etau hit Japan, according to a tally by the National Police Agency of Japan.

Six prefectures, including Hokkaido and Ehime, had deaths, while the agency said that nationwide eight houses were destroyed and 12 damaged by the season's 10th typhoon, which has weakened into a temperate depression.

In Hokkaido, a river flooded and destroyed a bridge in the town of Kamishihoro early Sunday, washing away a van carrying five people, police said.

The body of Toshiko Sasaki, 38, from Sapporo, was found in the van, while three other bodies, believed to be those of her husband, brother-in-law and one of her daughters, were also recovered by Monday morning, the police said, adding they are trying to identify them.

Another daughter who was in the van is still missing, and the police and local authorities are searching for her, along with six other people who have gone missing in Hokkaido.

The six include Toyo Tajima, 64, who went missing after a house was flooded at around 1 a.m. Sunday in Niikappu, and Mitsuo Sasaki, 51, who disappeared with another man at around 11 p.m. Saturday when they went to check a work site of a civil engineering company in Hidaka town as the typhoon was approaching.
