Michael Phelps broke the world record of men's 200-meter individual medley at the American National Swimming Championships on Saturday.
The previous world record was set by Phelps two weeks ago at the world championships at Barcelona, Spain. Phelps improved his own best by 0.1 seconds, winning the event with one minute and 55.94 seconds.
Phelps, who set five world records at the world championships, got another one as the first man to win five individual events at a national swimming championships meet.
Kevin Clements, finished a distant second in 1:59.56, which made him the second-best performer in the world this year.
"'Wow!' is all I can say right now," said Phelps, 18, who brokethree American records and one world record in the week. "I shock even myself. I told (coach) Bob (Bowman) that I was going out after it and would hope to hang on. And that's exactly how i swam."
