The German government on Saturday welcomed the praise by US President George W. Bush for Berlin's role in Afghanistan.
An anonymous government spokesman told German press that bush's words showed clearly the interest of Washington to strengthen its relations with Germany.
The remarks by bush have also made clear that certain challenges can only be solved jointly by the United States and other countries, the spokesman said.
Bush said Friday that Germany has played a role greater than the United States has expected in Afghanistan and that he wants to thank German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder for assuming responsibility.
Bush's praise contrasts with his coolness towards Schroeder after Berlin and Washington sparred with each other over the Iraqi issue.
The German government firmly opposed Washington's military action against Iraq, but has agreed recently to expand its peace-keeping presence in Afghanistan.
Schroeder plans to attend the 58th UN General Assembly in September and is speculated to hold bilateral talks with Bush for the first time in more than one year.
