China will launch a series of tourism initiatives in an attempt to reinvigorate its tourist industry after the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak, according to the National Tourism Administration.
Top of the list is the 15th plenary meeting of the World Tourism Organization, which will convene in Beijing in mid October. About 70 tourist ministers and nearly 1,000 delegates from more than 130 member countries are expected to take part.
Another major activity is based on the emergence of new scenic spots along the Three Gorges area with the filling of the reservoir.
"Visit the Three Gorges and witness history" will be the primary theme.
Ordinary Chinese people's lives will be the focus of a promotion next year which will include visits to hutongs, or traditional alleys, urban and rural scenic spots and ordinary farmhouses.
Meanwhile, the National Tourism Administration has reached consensus with the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games to jointly map out annual promotion plans combining tourism and the Olympic games from 2004 to 2008.
