The security of international sea transport routes should be given higher priority as the international situation becomes more complicated and volatile, Chinese relevant experts said at a seminar here Thursday.

Nations should enhance mutual understanding and trust, and reduce conflict and misunderstanding, so as to safeguard security on these major sea routes, known as sea lines of communication (SLOC).

The Chinese experts called for new regional economic and political orders to maintain world peace and stability.

More than 30 experts and scholars from the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations and other Chinese and international research institutes and officials from China's Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Communications attended the two-day seminar on "SLOC Security and Sino-US Nuclear Non-proliferation".

Participants discussed the prospects and challenges of Sino-US maritime cooperation, the impact of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction to SLOC security, and the terrorist threat to SLOC security and countermeasures.

They also pledged to push for the establishment of a security system on major sea routes to combat maritime crime and ensure safety.

The scholars also aired their views on the challenges of SLOC security and on expanding international cooperation to prevent weapons proliferation.

The seminar was jointly sponsored by the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations and the Ford Foundation of the United States.
