Ailing Azerbaijani President Geidar Aliev left a Turkish hospital on Wednesday for further treatment in the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, US.

Azerbaijan's embassy confirmed that the 80-year-old Aliev, who has not appeared in public since he was hospitalized on July 8 for heart treatment, left the Gulhane military hospital in Ankara for Cleveland but gave no details about his condition.

The move comes amid controversy back home over signs that his son, Ilham Aliev, is maneuvering to take over leadership of the tiny, oil-rich Caucasus nation. The younger Aliev was appointed prime minister this week, prompting opposition plans for a series of protests.

Despite earlier statements by Azerbaijani officials that Geidar Aliev would be returning to his country, doctors told press that his condition was serious and that they warned him against flying home, saying he was too frail.

Aliev, a former KGB official and Soviet-era leader of Azerbaijan, was elected president in 1993, two years after the nation became independent. His elevation of his son to the premiership approved Monday by parliament fueled allegations Ilham Aliev is being installed in power as the country gears up for October presidential elections.

According to constitutional changes approved last year, the prime minister becomes acting president if the president is incapacitated or resigns.
