Underwrites Laboratories Inc. (UL), a not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization based in the United States, is setting up a laboratory in Suzhou City of Jiangsu Province, east China.

The laboratory, to be operational next month, is a joint venture between UL and China National Import & Export Commodities Inspection Corporation, and will serve customers in the booming Yangtze River Delta region.

Product safety testing and certification is essential for international trade as required by the World Trade Organization.

Previously, UL concentrated its China business in the Pearl River Delta region in south China, China's dominant foreign trade area.

Founded in 1894, UL boasts more than 17 billion UL brand marks applied to products worldwide.
