Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China is ready to work with Russia to add to the "strategic cooperative partnership" between the two countries.

Hu told Sergei Mironov, chairman of the Federation Council (Upper House) of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, during a brief meeting, that a new China-Russia relationship for the 21st century could be created.

It would contribute to the common development and prosperity and to the peace and stability of the region and the world if China and Russia could strengthen political trust and expand mutually-beneficial cooperation, Hu said.

Hu paid a state visit to Russia last May. He and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a joint statement, stressing their intention to enhance relations and the strategic cooperative partnership.

Hu described the current China-Russia relations as "increasingly mature" following the development in the past decade. The relationship was characterized by regular and close top-level exchanges, the constant consolidation of the political and legal basis of bilateral relations, and the evident results in the areas of economy and trade, science and technology, and culture.

Mironov said the series of agreements reached by Hu and Russian President Putin during Hu's last visit to Russia injected new vigor to Russia-China relations. Russia will work with China to implement the agreements.

Mironov stressed that Russia always regards China "a good neighbor, a good friend and a good partner."

Hu said the two countries have established a mechanism for high level exchanges and made major achievements in economic co-operation. China is now Russia's fifth biggest trade partner, recording a bilateral trade volume of US$12 billion last year.

Premier Wen Jiabao Tuesday also vowed in a separate meeting with Mironov to work closely with Russia to implement all co-operative agreements signed by the heads of the two countries.

Mironov said bilateral trade needs to be improved and Russia wants to work more closely with China in the fields of nuclear energy and civil aviation.

Hu said the legislative bodies of the two countries should strengthen exchanges and co-operation to help develop bilateral ties.

Noting that the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly has established sound relations with the National People's Congress, Mironov pledged to enhance links between the two parliaments within the framework of the Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO).

"The young regional organization, which has already gained a high reputation, should broaden in scope,'' Mironov said.

When asked to comment on the joint anti-terror exercise to be held by the SCO soon, Mironov said the body has great potential to build partnerships in fighting terrorism.

Turning to the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Mironov said Russia and China share the same stance -- that the Korean Peninsula should be nuclear free, and the DPRK should receive effective security guarantees.

Mironov: China visit a complete success
Mironov said that his two-day China visit was a complete success. Mironov told Chinese media that he exchanged views with Chineseleaders on parliamentary exchanges and economic and trade cooperation during the visit and the two sides have reached consensus on a wide range of issues.

On Russia-China economic and trade cooperation, Mironov said the two countries' cooperation in energy has been fruitful. He suggested the two countries increase the proportion of machinery business in bilateral trade and further explore cooperation in thefields of nuclear energy, machinery and civil airplane manufacturing.

Mironov said Russia attaches great importance to regional cooperation between the two countries, especially the cooperation along the border areas. He said the Russian side has proposed holding a seminar on Russia-China border cooperation, which the Chinese side has accepted. Details of the seminar will be further discussed, he said.

Mironov and his party left Beijing Tuesday night.
