Liberian rebel leader Sekou Damate Conneh declared in Rome that rebels besieging Liberia 's capital, Monrovia, will leave when West African peace-keeping forces arrive there on Monday.
Conneh, leader of the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), made the statement in an interview with Reuters News Agency as the first contingent of Nigerian peacekeepers left Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone, for Monrovia on Monday morning.
"We're going to pull out as soon as the peacekeepers arrive," Reuters quoted Conneh as saying.
Nigerian peace-keepers left neighboring Sierra Leone aboard twoUN helicopters and are expected to arrive in Monrovia later on Monday to help police a ceasefire in the war-torn west African country.
The peacekeepers will be spearheaded by a battalion of Nigerianinfantry currently on duty with a UN force in neighboring Sierra Leone.
