The number of people affected by suspected food poisoning in Willow village about 870 km south of Johannesburg rose to 64 by Monday night.
Eastern Cape health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said, "The whole village could be affected. All the people attended a funeral on Sunday and apparently drank homemade ginger ale."
Kupelo said the villagers who were admitted to the Umtata general hospital complained of diarrhea, headaches and vomiting.
"Five people remain in a serious condition tonight and cannot walk due to severe pain," he said.
He said the department would conduct a range of tests to see what had caused the sickness, including tests for cholera.
Kupelo said that in an unrelated case, 13 people were also admitted to the Umtata hospital on Saturday for alleged food poisoning.
The group had apparently eaten goat and cow meat in Baziya village near Umtata when they displayed food poisoning symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.
