China Makes Headway in Continental Drilling Operation
As of 4:00 a.m. Monday, a continental drilling project for scientific research had reached 3,358.52 meters deep into the earth in Donghai County, east China's Jiangsu Province, completing 67.2 percent of the planned depth of 5,000 meters.

The five-year project began in 2001 and is expected to cost a total of 166 million yuan (20 million US dollars).
It is one of China's key scientific projects and also a major international continental drilling program.
