China's Twentieth National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) Started at Shanghai's prestigious Fudan University on Monday.

Sponsored by the China Computer Federation (CCF), the five-day event has drawn 131 secondary school students under the age of 19 from 30 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, and delegates from Hong Kong and Macao.

The Olympiad is a competition of intelligence and programming skill. Each participant has to solve a set of algorithmic programming problems within a limited time.

Apart from proficiency in at least one programming language, competitors have to be adept analysts and find an effective solution, which will then be transformed into a computer program.

The organizers also use the event as a means of selecting the best students for the annual International Olympiad in Informatics(IOI).

The IOI is one of the five international science Olympiads initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The four other subject areas of science Olympiads are mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.

There are similar local or national science Olympiads in various countries and regions.
