Sight First China Action Restores Sight to More Cataract Patients

During the past year, nearly 2,000 cataract patients in poor and remote areas in Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province, regained their eyesight after receiving free treatment from the nationwide Sight First China Action.

During the past year, nearly 2,000 cataract patients in poor and remote areas in Shantou, south China's Guangdong Province, regained their eyesight after receiving free treatment from the nationwide Sight First China Action.

The program was launched in 1997 by the Ministry of Health, the China Disabled Persons' Federation, and the Lion's Club International (LCI), one of the world's largest charity organizations.

Under the first five-year phase of the program, 7,487 cataract patients in Shantou, most of them from poverty-stricken areas, hadtheir sight restored.

The program plans to treat about 1,800 cataract patients each year during its second phase in Shantou from 2002 to 2007.
