Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebel political wing leader S.P. Thamilchelvan has refused to accept thetruce monitors' ruling to remove a camp built by them which they said was in the area under their control, the pro-rebel website reported on Saturday.

Thamilchelvan, the political wing leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) told reporters in Muttur in the east of the country on Friday evening that there was no need for him toinspect the Kanniya camp set up by them in the eastern area of Trincomalee.

He added that the area had been under the LTTE's control for a long time and it was "unjust" for the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission(SLMM) or the Sri Lankan army to ask the LTTE to remove the camp.

Thamilchelvan is currently on a week-long inspection tour in the east of the country. He arrived at the eastern area by a Sri Lankan air force helicopter on Friday.

The SLMM has ruled that the rebels must dismantle their camp asit was built in the government-controlled area, but the rebels have remained defiant against the removal of the camp.

The LTTE rebels have been observing a formal ceasefire with thegovernment since the two sides entered a truce agreement in February last year.

The two sides had held six rounds of peace talks since last September until the rebels pulled out of the talks in April.
