China's economic center Shanghai has sweltered through 14 days with daily high temperatures topping 35 degrees centigrade, the longest heat wave in 50 years.

The temperature was forecast to hit 40 degrees at noon on Saturday and the heat wave is expected to last at least another three to four days, said the Shanghai meteorological station Friday.

The highest temperature on Friday reached 38.8 degrees, just below the 39.6 degrees high of July 25, the highest temperature inShanghai in 60 years.

The increasing use of electric air conditioners was generating added heat, said meteorologists.

The weather could cool when a mild cold air current came southwards in the middle of next week, said Yao Zuqing, senior engineer with the meteorological station.
