Construction of China's biggest natural gas power plant has been launched in Zhangjiagang City in Jiangsu Province, east China, local officials said on Friday.

A spokesman for Zhangjiagang-based Huaxing Power Co said the first generator would produce power in August of 2005 and the second generator in February of 2006.

The company planned to invest 2.5 billion yuan (304 million US dollars) in the project, which will consume 700 million cubic meters of natural gas each year.

The natural gas will come from the country's western areas via a pipeline under construction.

The spokesman said the power to be generated by the plant will meet the demand by local economy for clean energy.

Plans for nine other similar projects have yet to be approved by the Chinese government.
