Heavy Fighting Erupts in Liberian Capital
Heavy fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Liberian President Charles Taylor erupted near a key bridge leading into the center of the capital Monrovia on Friday, a report said.
Heavy fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Liberian President Charles Taylor erupted near a key bridge leading into the center of the capital Monrovia on Friday, a report said.
The fighting came the day after West African leaders approved the deployment of a peacekeeping force to Liberia, where two weeks of bloodshed in the city have killed at least 1,000 people.
The report said rebels fighting to topple Taylor had tried to cross the bridge into the city center.
West African heads of state met in the Ghanaian capital on Thursday at an emergency summit to review the crisis in Liberia ahead of the deployment of a peacekeeping force to the war-torn country.
They pledge that peacekeeping troops for Liberia would be deployed by Monday. President Taylor would go into exile three days later, they added.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit followed the arrival Wednesday in the Liberian capital Monrovia of a Nigerian-led team to evaluate the situation for sending in peacekeepers.
