Flood in Northwest China Leaves 2 People Missing
Mountain torrents that had flooded the downtown area of Fugu county, northwestern Shaanxi province early Wednesday have left two people missing and caused grave economic losses.
Mountain torrents that had flooded the downtown area of Fugu county, northwestern Shaanxi province early Wednesday have left two people missing and caused grave economic losses.
Sources with the county government said Thursday that the floodwas caused by more than four hours of incessant heavy rains, starting a little past 2:00 a.m. and lasting until around 7:00 a.m.Wednesday.
The rain also elevated the water level of the Fugu section of the Yellow River.
According to statistics provided by the county government Thursday afternoon, the flood inundated 1,160 hectares of cropland,1,071 km of road, large numbers of houses and disrupted power and water supply and communications in certain areas.
Initial estimates done by the county government put the direct economic losses at more than 38.6 million yuan (about 4.65 millionUS dollars).
The county government has aroused policemen and local people to participate in rescue and flood relief work.
