Liberian President Charles Taylor, aformer warlord being urged to step down both by international community and domestic rebels, will "not necessarily" leave by next week, a spokesman said Thursday in Monrovia.
Presidential Spokesman Vanii Paassewe said when Taylor will leave depends on the negotiations going on in Ghana's capital Accra between the warring parties of Liberia.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced at an emergency summit in Accra on Thursday that peacekeepers will begin deploying in Liberia on Monday, and Taylorwould then have to leave within the following three days.
Paassewe said "President Taylor will not necessarily follow up this timetable. The timetable and the transfer of authority will depend on the agreement reached in Accra."
West African heads of state met in Accra on Thursday at an emergency summit to review the crisis in Liberia ahead of the deployment of a peacekeeping force to the war-torn country.
The ECOWAS summit followed the arrival Wednesday in the Liberian capital Monrovia of a Nigerian-led team to evaluate the situation for sending in peacekeepers.
