City in East China Struck by Heat Wave
Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, is in the grip of an intense heat wave, which has kept the daily maximum temperature above 39.7 degrees Celsius for 22 days since the beginning of July.

The continuous heat wave has set a new record in 10 years. So far, some 46,000 people and 16,000 head of livestock in suburban Nanchang have suffered drinking water shortages.
The city government has issued an emergency notice, calling on authorities to secure water and electricity supplies and immediately repair any faults.
Medical and fire-fighting services were are cautioned to stay alert for possible emergencies.
The notice especially urged rural grassroots organizations to guard against forest fires, manage irrigation for cropland, stimulate artificial rainfall when possible, and safeguard social order, particularly to prevent panic squabbles to get water.
According to the local weather station, the high temperature will continue for another week.
