Macao's Chief Executive Meets WHO Official

Edmund Ho, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region government, met on Tuesday with the Western Pacific Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Shigeru Omi.

Edmund Ho, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region government, met on Tuesday with the Western Pacific Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Shigeru Omi.

Omi arrived in Macao on Monday on a three-day inspection visit at the invitation of the Macao government in connection with the review work of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) control.

Ho told Omi that his government has heeded WHO's warning on a possible SARS outbreak in Autumn. Macao will continue to closely keep in touch with WHO on the latest research development on the epidemic.

Omi is the highest-rank WHO expert to visit Macao this year. Hevisited the isolation facilitates designated for treating SARS patients and disposing suspected infection, and was briefed by Macao's SARS control officials on how the city had prevented SARS on Tuesday.

Macao is a member of the WHO's West Pacific Region. Its SARS prevention and control work has been highly praised by the other three WHO experts who came to Macao's aid after the epidemic brokeout in the neighboring regions of south China's Guangdong Provinceand Hong Kong. Macao has successfully contained the virus from spreading through its border gates, with only one SARS case found and cured.
