Liberian government's senior official attending Accra peace talks to end 14-year civil war in the West African country Tuesday rejected a unilateral ceasefire offer by the main rebel group Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), according to reports from Ghana's capital Accra.

Ceasefire meant that the insurgents "must withdraw from the capital Monrovia altogether," Liberia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Lewis Brown was quoted as saying.

"Withdrawing to the Freeport just isn't good enough. It's unacceptable," he said.

According to the Liberian government negotiator, the LURD "mustrelease their stranglehold on the (capital) city" and "withdraw tothe positions they held" prior to the June 17 ceasefire agreement.

Earlier, the LURD declared a unilateral ceasefire. Also a LURD delegate at peace talks in Ghana said that the main rebel faction would pull back to Monrovia's port.

But rebels in and around the capital Monrovia said that their promised ceasefire would not be effective until the government troops loyal to President Charles Taylor stop attacking their forces.
