Fireworks Plant Death Toll Rises to Seven

The death toll of an explosion in Monday's fireworks factory in north China's Hebei province rose to seven by Tuesday morning, with 87 injured still in hospital, including three policemen.

The death toll of an explosion in Monday's fireworks factory in north China's Hebei province rose to seven by Tuesday morning, with 87 injured still in hospital, including three policemen.

The blast occurred at 6:08 p.m. Monday, injuring 107 people and destroying the main workshops of the factory in Wangkou town of Xinji city in the south of the province.

Local officials said victims with slight injuries have been discharged from hospitals thanks to rescue efforts by about 300 policemen, military and medical workers

The powerful explosion at the fireworks factory also blew up half of a two-storied office building.

Covering 6.6 hectares, the factory was licensed by local policein December 2000 to produce the products.
