Zambian President Praises China's Support to Its Economy

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Monday thanked the Chinese government for continued support to its economic development while attending a ceremony celebrating full production of a Chinese copper company in Zambia.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Monday thanked the Chinese government for continued support to its economic development while attending a ceremony celebrating full production of a Chinese copper company in Zambia.

Mwanawasa made the remarks at a grand ceremony held in Kitwe ofCopperbelt province, saying "we greatly appreciate assistance yourgreat country has extended to Zambia over the years, in areas suchas the construction of the Tanzania/Zambia railway line."

Mwanawasa said the full production of Chambishi Mine, which is invested by the Chinese company, will further strengthen the relationship that has existed between China and Zambia.

Peng Keyu, Chinese ambassador to Zambia, said at the same function, the successful rehabilitation and commencement of production of Chambishi Mine marks a new achievement of bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Chinese company in Chambishi Mine began its full productionMonday after three years' construction.

Chambishi Mine is the first and the largest overseas non-ferrous mine invested by China, with a total investment of 150 million US dollars. It is located on a rich copper bed based on the world famous Zambia-Congo copper mine belt.

After the rehabilitation project, Chambishi Mine will operate with working capacity of 6,500 tons of ore per day, produce 114,000 tons of copper concentrate per year.
