US President George W. Bush will sign a bill imposing economic sanctions against Myanmar to punish the government of the Asian country for continued detention of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, the White House said Monday.

Spokesman Scott McClellan, who was traveling with Bush in a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, told reporters that the president will sign the bill after returning to Washington from the trip.

He said the legislation sends a clear message to the governmentof Myanmar that the continued detention of Aung San Suu Kyi was "unacceptable."

The House of Representatives and the Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve the legislation over the past two days.

The sanctions bill, if signed by Bush, will affect Myanmar's exports to the United States.
