Beijing
was awarded the 2005 Sudirman Cup at the council meeting of the International Badminton Federation (IBF) Birmingham on Sunday.
Beijing beat Glasgow of Scotland in an overwhelming victory to win the right to host the 8th mixed team world championship.
At the same meeting, Los Angeles of the
United States
was chosen over Copenhagen of
Denmark
to stage the 14th world individual championships in 2005.
It is the first time for China to host the Sudirman Cup. The traditional badminton powerhouse staged the world championships in1987, which was split into world individual championships and Sudirman Cup this year.
Guangzhou of Southern China also played host to the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals last year, the highest-level men's team and women's team events in the world.
Beijing made their bid early this year and sent observers to Eindhoven of the
Netherlands
in March where the 7th Sudirman Cup was held.
Beijing, the host city for the 2008 Olympics, hopes to use the Sudirman Cup as part of their preparations for the Games.
