Agriculture ministers from seven South American countries Saturday declared a regional alert for foot-and-mouth disease at a meeting in Bolivia.

The ministers from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay,Peru and Uruguay signed an agreement to set in motion an emergency plan to fight the disease, including a mass vaccination campaign, according to reports from La Paz, the capital of Bolivia.

The ministers also pledged their governments' efforts to eradicate the foot-and-mouth disease before 2009, the reports said.

The meeting was held in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, at the request of the Bolivian government in the face of a new foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the Bolivian states of Cuquisaca and Potosi, and its neighboring Paraguay.

Foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious and it mainly affects sheep, pigs and cattle, but not humans.
