Cambodia's eligible voters began casting ballots early Sunday to vote for a new National Assembly, which will appoint a new government for the next five years.

Smiling and looking relaxed, Hun Sen, incumbent Prime Minister and leader of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), cast his ballot with his wife Bun Rany Hun Sen at the Takhmau polling station, seven kilometers south of Phnom Penh.

Hun Sen did not deliver any speech about the election at the polling station, saying he could not break the regulations of the National Election Committee that any candidate could not make a speech at polling stations.

It is the third National Assembly election held in Cambodia, the last two were in 1993 and 1998, respectively.

A total of 12,826 polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. local time and will close at 3:00 p.m. local time for up to 6.3 million eligible voters.

Ballot counting will start on Monday and earliest results of the election are expected to be released on Aug. 8.
