Road Traffic Accidents Kill 48,346 in First Half Year
China had 330,675 road traffic accidents during the first half of this year, killing 48,346 people and injuring 239,450, China's Ministry of Public Security announced here Friday.

The figures dropped 13.6 percent, 7.6 percent and 13.3 percent respectively compared to the same time last year, said the ministry.
But direct economic losses caused by the accidents rose 5.2 percent compared with the same period last year, to 1.67 billion yuan (about 202 million US dollars), the ministry said.
The number of road traffic accidents dropped during the past six months, but the number of multi-fatality accidents rose significantly.
Statistics showed that the number of traffic accidents with at least 10 people killed, jumped 33.3 percent to 24 during the past six months, leaving 355 people dead and 318 injured.
The ministry said 77.3 percent of the traffic death toll was byd rivers' ignorance of traffic rules.
Drink driving was another big problem which had caused 5,666 accidents during the past six months and killed 1,944 people, witha death rate of 0.34 person per case compared with the average of 0.15 person per case.
The ministry also said there were a total of 9,663 incidents where drivers fled after causing accidents, causing 4,102 deaths.
