With the rapid approach of the fifth ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Economic Ministers' Meeting, Dalian, a major port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, is well-prepared for the event.

The three-day meeting is set to begin Tuesday as the largest and most important international conference held in China since the outbreak of the SARS epidemic.

The organizing committee has been working since the beginning of April to ensure the meeting to be a success, an official from the committee told reporters. The preparation work in security, medical services, publicity, communications and logistics has been completed, he added.

He noted that SARS prevention has been one of the most important tasks of the organizing committee, and precautionary measures, including regular disinfection of transport vehicles and conference facilities, daily physical examination of staff in the conference center and hotels, and related medical emergency aid, have been put in place to ensure the health of all delegates to the conference.

Meanwhile, more than 10,000 policemen have been mobilized to guarantee the safety of all delegates and reporters.

During the economic ministers' meeting, which will end Thursday, discussions on the new round of WTO (World Trade Organization) free trade talks, the current situation of the global economy, and economic cooperation between the two continents will top the agenda.

The ASEM groups 10 Asian countries, including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and seven ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) members (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), the 15 European Union (EU) member states and the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU.
